Topic description
MMED8105 and MMED8204 (year 2) provide a two year developmental program in health professions and societies. This topic introduces core knowledge and concepts that underpin socially responsible health professional practice. It introduces the different aspects of the role of health professionals within Australian societies, including interactions with patients, community and cultural groups, civil society organisations and members of a range of professions. Key main themes: Ethics Law and Professionalism, Public Health, Indigenous Health & Cultural Safety.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Understand the social, cultural and political context of healthcare

  • Develop an understanding of key influences on public health

  • Develop an understanding and ability to work within the legal and ethical frameworks which govern medical practice

  • Develop skills to practice with cultural safety and humility in a diversity of settings including Indigenous communities.

  • Expected learning outcomes
    On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

    1. Develop an awareness of how legal and professional frameworks affect medical law, government health policy, and clinical practice.

    2. Demonstrate an ability to use ethical terminology appropriately to analyse ethical issues and to apply basic ethical concepts to medical practice.

    3. Develop a basic understanding of professionalism and the behavioural norms underwriting medical practice

    4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of cultural inter-professional communication through evaluation and reflection of indigenous patient health experiences.

    5. Develop an insight into their own assumptions and cultural background and recognise how they can impact on health practice.

    6. Discuss the social determinants of health in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and of the ways that history has had an impact on health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    7. Develop a basic understanding of evidence-based approaches to targeting key health issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    8. Recognise the need to balance individual and group responsibilities in health promotion and maintenance.
