Topic description
This topic focuses on the application of anatomy and physiology, pathology, microbiology and pharmacology related to nursing care and the development of knowledge and skills to support professional experience placement, and introduces the concept of integrated nursing care. The topic includes professional experience placement.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • begin to apply an understanding of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology and pharmacology as these relate to nursing care

  • develop relevant clinical skills and knowledge in preparation for clinical practice

  • develop a beginning understanding of professional nursing practice

  • develop at a beginning level the ability to incorporate information technology in clinical practice to improve the quality of healthcare delivery.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify and discuss appropriate contextualised nursing care of designated patients, using knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and evidence-based standards, guidelines, protocols and procedures

  • describe the ways in which drugs act at the site of action (pharmacodynamics) and relate to the pathophysiology of cases observed in the clinical area and the evidence that supports this

  • demonstrate appropriate therapeutic and professional communication skills, including assertive communication techniques and communication within an interprofessional healthcare team

  • use models and tools to effectively prioritise information when communicating about a patient and their situation

  • undertake fundamental nursing skills for clients in a clinical setting
  • describe strategies for building resilience in personal/professional practice

  • complete competently and efficiently the appropriate documentation required in their nursing role/setting including charts and beginning nursing progress notes

  • describe the information technology encountered on professional experience placement and the evidence behind how this supports the delivery of health care

  • describe how information technology facilitates interdisciplinary communication.
