Topic description
This topic contextualises the role of the nurse within the professional practice setting and further develops the professional and interprofessional behaviours introduced in first year. It includes professional experience placement.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • further build fundamental skills for nursing

  • reinforce the legal and ethical standards and cultural obligations of professional practice

  • introduce the structures and processes of management within the PEP setting (governance)

  • further develop the ability to communicate effectively within the healthcare team

  • explore the concept of health informatics and its incorporation into contemporary health care

  • introduce quantitative analysis for healthcare evaluation, research and evidence-based practice

  • develop strategies for professional self-care.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate behaviours that are consistent with the legal, ethical, cultural and evidence-based obligations of professional practice

  • describe their place within the governance structure of a healthcare organisation and whom they are accountable to and responsible for

  • use appropriate professional self-care strategies

  • identify appropriate processes for professional nursing communication within a healthcare organisation

  • identify appropriate communication processes to promote collaboration in planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care

  • describe the professional use of patient records systems, including medication records

  • identify strategies and appropriate documentation for non-administration of medications

  • identify appropriate use of information and communication technology in relation to the evidence-based provision of health care

  • demonstrate professional standards in written and verbal communication and the use of information and communication technology.
