Topic description
This topic explores the care required for patients with a compromised health pattern, and includes:

  • theory underpinning practice

  • activities of daily living (ADLs)

  • rationales for clinical skills

  • practice and development of clinical skills

  • therapeutic communication within the healthcare team

  • the concept of empowerment

  • application of ethical and legal standards

  • patient discharge / hospital avoidance strategies / packages of care / ACAT assessments.

Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • assess and document a patient's need for assistance with ADLs

  • assist a patient with their ADLs in a supportive and restorative manner

  • apply ethical and legal standards to their practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • assess a patient for a healthcare plan and document the assessment

  • using the best available evidence, develop an individualised plan of care (with associated rationales) for a child and for an adult which addresses their:

    • eating

    • drinking

    • breathing

    • elimination

    • mobility

    • safety

    • skin integument

    • pain management

    • behaviours

    • cognition

    • emotional needs

    • social needs

    • sexuality

    • spirituality

  • identify relevant assistive resources for implementing the client/patient’s plan of care, including discharge planning

  • identify their own scope of practice and work within it

  • work collaboratively with other health professionals to plan and implement care

  • critically appraise patient information and its meaning for the planning, implementation and evaluation of care (nursing process)

  • prepare shift reports, including electronic healthcare records and other documentation where relevant.
