Topic description
In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge through critical exploration of evidence-based principles and practices in nursing that underpin primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to develop advanced knowledge of preventative cardiovascular nursing at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • differentiate between primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of cardiovascular disease

  • discuss the role of the registered nurse in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of cardiovascular disease

  • explain the advanced knowledge required to identify, assess and manage cardiovascular disease risk factors

  • formulate a person-centred care approach to assist individuals in the prevention, recovery and management of cardiac conditions

  • evaluate ideas and strategies for patient education and behaviour change in the context of preventative cardiovascular nursing.
