Topic description
In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge through critical exploration of evidence-based principles and practices in nursing that underpin acute cardiovascular conditions and associated nursing care.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to develop a critical exploration of the evidence based principles and practices related to specialised nursing care required for people across the lifespan with acute cardiovascular conditions.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • Critically analyse and discuss the role and responsibilities of the registered nurse in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease

  • Analyse and explain potential physical, psychological and psychosocial implications experienced by patients with cardiovascular conditions and their families/significant others

  • Critically evaluate and synthesise the best available evidence and relevant professional standards for planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for people with cardiovascular conditions

  • Analyse and explain the best practice treatment and management options, including pharmacology, for patients with cardiovascular conditions

  • Justify the person-centred, holistic approach required to assist individuals and their families/significant others in the prevention, recovery and management of cardiac conditions
