Topic description
In this topic students will examine the health of populations, and consider social and structural determinants of health including the influence of political, environmental, geographic and economic factors.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to apply population health knowledge and principles to professional practice through the development of an understanding of key influences on the health of populations and strategies to influence health outcomes for individuals and communities.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge on health and illness from a population health perspective

  • articulate the interdisciplinary, inter-sectoral and global imperatives for health

  • identify and understand determinants of health in relation to behaviour and health outcomes

  • apply population health knowledge and principles to illness prevention, health promotion and community capacity building

  • utilise and apply current best evidence and epidemiology in population health to practice
