Topic description
This topic continues the development of advanced skills in therapeutic communication within a recovery orientated framework. Students will focus on the therapeutic relationship by utilising a range of psychotherapies and counselling techniques for individual, family and group work that can be applied to hospital and community settings in mental health.
Educational aims
This topic enables students to develop skills, knowledge and attributes for:

  • the practice of counselling and group work as nurses working in mental health settings

  • advanced communication in the context of mental health nursing and the maintenance of therapeutic relationships.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to;

  • demonstrate therapeutic approaches for effective counselling and group work within an evidence based framework,

  • demonstrate respect for therapeutic boundaries in effective counselling and group work, particularly in relation to the therapeutic use of self,

  • demonstrate ethical, racial, cultural, religious and gender sensitivity in counselling and group work,

  • critically reflect on their mental health nursing practice and recognise the benefits of ongoing clinical supervision,

  • demonstrate the ability to facilitate / co facilitate individual and group work,

  • practice in compliance with the Australian College of Mental Health Nursing Standards,

  • articulate the rationale for chosen interventions and clinical decision making within an evidence based framework
