Topic description
This topic is action-oriented and focused on practice. It explores the role of public health and related professionals in initiating and facilitating meaningful change to contribute to achieving equity in health for individuals, groups and communities. Specifically the topic examines theories of power and empowerment within a primary health care approach. Students’ views of the world, their experiences and willingness to apply these frameworks in relevant settings and work sites will influence how they learn about these frameworks for change. Students will be provided with tools and building blocks to go beyond thinking in the abstract and utilise opportunities to apply them to their own work places or other existing initiatives.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to develop their capacity to apply an understanding of primary health care approaches to creating change in health and other related professional settings.
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of primary health approaches to public health as a context for change relating to equity in health

  • Identify examples of change in practice

  • Discuss theories of power and empowerment inherent in primary health care approaches to change.
