Topic description
This topic is available to students enrolled in other graduate awards with the approval of the course coordinator MPH.

This topic provides students with the knowledge and skills required to plan and undertake the comprehensive evaluation of public health/primary health care programs. Students develop their understanding of key evaluation issues and expand their knowledge of evaluation methods. In particular, this topic focuses on the key complexities inherent in the evaluation of programs based on public health/primary health care principles. Students are involved in critically appraising a range of evaluations and designing a public health/primary health care evaluation relevant to their area of work or interests. This topic also assists students to identify and compile a range of practical evaluation resources for use in their future work.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with an opportunity to develop their capacity to plan and undertake the evaluation of public health and primary health care initiatives.

  • enhance students' theoretical and practical understanding ofkey evaluation issues relevant to the practice of public health and primary health care.

Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Apply a range of key evaluation concepts to the evaluation of public health and primary health care initiatives.

  • Analyse critically examples of public health and primary health care evaluation, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the evaluations.

  • Select appropriate methods for the evaluation of a range of public health and primary health care initiatives.

  • Provide a convincing rationale for the development of an evaluation plan for a public health or primary health care initiative of their choice.

  • Identify strategies to facilitate the dissemination and utilisation of evaluation findings.

  • Review critically and identify a range of evaluation resources for use in current projects and for future work.
