Topic description
This topic will examine the most significant current issues in moral and political philosophy. Issues to be discussed will include: In moral philosophy, cognitivism versus non-cognitivism and/or objectivism versus subjectivism in ethics; questions to do with moral motivation; and the nature of moral reasons. In political philosophy, the issues will include the nature of justice, various versions of egalitarianism and the problems associated with multi-culturalism and difference.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to:

  • the most significant current problems in moral philosophy, particularly in meta-ethics and moral psychology

  • the most significant current issues and theories in political philosophy
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • explain the various positions and theories discussed in meta-ethics, moral psychology and contemporary political philosophy

  • critically assess the above position and theories

  • write lucidly on the arguments and issues discussed in this topic
