Topic description
This topic introduces writing conventions for advertising and public relations, including writing media releases, media and public relations campaigns, communication strategies, and advertising for a range of media distribution.

The different writing styles for each of these communication types will be explored, as well as how to identify, and meet, client expectations/needs. Ethical and legal issues, and market research and sponsorship will be addressed.

Students will be given opportunities to improve their abilities to critically assess their own writing, and the writing of others.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provides students with the opportunity to practice techniques for writing for advertising and public relations
  • introduce students to ethical and legal considerations when producing media publications
  • develop students’ skills in editing their own work in the production of documents for publication
  • explore issues related to advertising and public relations, including ethics, legal requirements, market research, content creation, PR strategies, brand management, and sponsorship
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • research, prepare and produce advertising copy and public relations media
  • discuss ethical standards and their implications when developing advertising and public relations documentation for media outlets
  • analyse and discuss a range of advertising campaigns and public relations strategies
  • write advertising and public relations copy at professional standards for specified digital or print media outlets
  • critically edit their own work and analyse the work of other writers in the field
