Topic description
This topic will focus on the way in which psychological theory and research can be applied to issues in clinical and health psychology. Through in depth examination of a small number of issues, the topic will illustrate how psychological principles, theories and research can further our understanding of key clinical or health problems in society. Potential specific areas of study are trauma, eating behaviour and body image.
Educational aims
The topic aims to introduce students to both theory and research in relatively new areas of psychological inquiry. Research in both health and clinical psychology utilizes a myriad of different psychological approaches (e.g., cognitive, developmental, experimental, social and physiological psychology). Thus the topic will provide students with opportunity to apply their general psychological knowledge to specific areas of study.
Expected learning outcomes
Students completing this topic should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of the major theoretical perspectives and empirical methods used in the specific areas of study

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the sociocultural context that influences clinical and health issues

  4. Demonstrate the ability for coherent argument through a written report

  5. Apply the theory and research findings in the topic to practical problems encountered in everyday life
