Topic description
This topic provides opportunities for students to further develop the skills of writing a short screenplay. Students will further develop skills in narrative structure, plot, tone, character and genre to develop a 6-8 minute screenplay for a major production project.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • further develop student skills in concepts including story, drama, narrative structure, tone, character and plot

  • further develop student skills in concepts including symbolism, motif, genre and film construction

  • further develop student skills in writing short screen plays

  • instil in students the importance and role of the screenplay in the creation of short film

  • further develop the construction of classic narrative and alternative narrative form in short films

  • allow students the opportunity to write a short script of 6-8 minutes duration for their major production project
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:

  • identify and analyse story, script structures, drama, tone, plot and character for short film

  • have demonstrated an advanced understanding of symbolism, motif, genre and film construction for short film

  • be able to collaborate with their peers in script conceptualisation and development

  • be able to demonstrate the importance of screenplays in the creation of short films

  • have demonstrated an advanced understanding of classic narrative and alternative narrative form or short films

  • be able to develop a synopsis, treatment, character breakdown and script for a short film

  • be able to apply their knowledge of scriptwriting to write a short film script of 6-8 minutes duration for their major production project
