Sociology Honours
Topic description
The topic will provide students with a critical overview of recent developments in social theory and modern sociology. Critical attention will be focused upon a range of central conceptual dilemmas in sociology such as the globalization debate as well as questions of modernity, identity and contemporary race relations. Students will debate the competing conceptual, ideological and political ramifications of key perspectives and schools of thought in sociology.
Educational aims
Successful completion of the module will support the following aims of the programme regarding intellectual and subject-specific skills by providing students with:
- an ability to communicate theoretical material and conceptual arguments through written and oral modes
- assignments will direct students to gather, retrieve and synthesize information from a variety of sources - textual, tabular and electronic
- seminars will discuss the validity of particular arguments based on texts and evidence
- an ability to explore the interrelationship between theory, method and social practices
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of this Topic successful students will:
- Have explored central theoretical perspectives on sociology and be able to highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
- Be able to identify and critically discuss the conceptual adequacy and political/ideological ramifications of key theoretical perspectives in sociology.
- Be able to communicate in written form the complexities of current sociological theories.
- Have developed their ability to present sociologically reasoned arguments.
