Topic description
This topic introduces the art of pastoral care. Theological and ethical issues of care will be explored. Pastoral listening, non-anxious presence, reflection, exploration and prayer will be studied and practiced throughout the class.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • familiarise students with theological, ethical and personal attributes fundamental to pastoral care
  • provide students with a variety of opportunities for reflection and practice of pastoral care
  • offer a safe environment for exploring and developing students’ theological framework of care
Expected learning outcomes
Students who have completed this topic will be able to:

  • define and apply pastoral skill in conversations of care
  • identify and explore ethical issues in pastoral practice
  • demonstrate ethical pastoral practice including appropriate assessment and referral options
  • construct a theological framework for pastoral practice.
