Topic description
The aspects of Paul's thought on which the Corinthian letters throw most light include his understanding of life in the body, life in the Spirit, life in the church and life eternal. This topic considers these and the context of the church at Corinth in a detailed study of the letters. Students will also develop their skills in exegesis as they study particular passages.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • help gain an understanding of 1 & 2 Corinthians both in their particularity and in their coherence with Paul's thought as a whole
  • enable students to develop skills in exegetic competence as they study particular passages of the material under consideration
  • examine some of Paul's thought relevant to this material, e.g., his understanding of life in the body; life in the Spirit; life in the church and life eternal

Expected learning outcomes
By completing this topic the student will be able to:

  • exegete selected passages from 1 & 2 Corinthians
  • analyse major themes of the Corinthian correspondence, e.g., 'flesh', 'body', 'spirit', 'dualism', and 'resurrection'
  • contextualise the Corinthian correspondence within the corpus of Paul's works thereby demonstrating a familiarity with its wider context and meaning
