Topic description
This topic explores the theological, historical and contextual dimensions of Protestant worship. It seeks to develop skills in worship leadership, including sensitivity to contemporary cultural and international trends.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • enable students to consider the nature of Christian worship in the Protestant tradition, including its theology, history, practice and emerging trends
  • explore the role that ritual plays in human identity and development, the transforming function of worship and the development of diverse liturgical practice to date
  • develop the practical and creative skills needed for leadership of worship in a local church
  • examine the inter-relationships between the worship life, preaching and mission of the church

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the historical, theological and biblical foundations of Christian worship and how they relate to worship today
  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the distinct components and flow of an order of worship
  • demonstrate skills in writing, crafting and delivering liturgical material in diverse worship settings
  • draw on a range of contemporary movements in the Christian church to enliven worship
