Topic description
This topic surveys the major beliefs and practices of several world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese Religions, Judaism and Islam. It also introduces students to the study of religion today, particularly in contemporary Australia. Reference is made to primary texts (scriptures), the experience of ordinary believers and their dialogue with Christianity.
Educational aims
This topics aims to assist students to:

  • become familiar with the beliefs and practices of several major world religions
  • develop an understanding of the issues facing religions today
  • work in a seminar group to consolidate learning and share ideas with others

Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • identify and differentiate the basic beliefs of several religious traditions
  • recognise the significance of the experience of 'ordinary' believers
  • recognise the diversity of religious and spiritual traditions
