Topic description
The topic provides foundational skills in the critical examination of the biblical wisdom writings, including the deutero-canonical/apocryphal texts. Interpretation draws largely upon historical-critical methodology. Feminist Criticism and contemporary Literary Criticism are also utilised. Emphasis is placed on theologies of creation, theodicy and images of God in the wisdom literature. Relevance of these theologies to contemporary understanding of the world and society are explored.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • examine the concept of biblical wisdom and the wisdom writings

  • provide foundational knowledge and understanding of the content of the wisdom writings and their historical and cultural settings

  • investigate the forms and literary features of the wisdom writings

  • evaluate the main theological themes in the wisdom writings critically

  • develop critical approaches to the study of the wisdom writings

  • evaluate implications for feminist interpretation of canonical and deutero-canonical/apocryphal writings

  • investigate the significance of the wisdom writings for a contemporary context
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify and analyse critically the nature of “biblical wisdom"

  • analyse the cultural and historical situation that fostered wisdom writing

  • evaluate critically interpretive and theological issues surrounding wisdom writings and their relevance in a contemporary context

  • articulate the richness of wisdom's theologies of creation

  • evaluate wisdom's contribution to a theology of the Creator

  • demonstrate critical analysis of scriptures and the ability to prepare an exegesis
