Topic description
This topic introduces students to a variety of approaches and creative practices used across a range studios in 2D and/or 3D art, offered as part of the Visual Arts major. The studios available may change from year to year. Students will gain an understanding of the safe use of materials, tools and equipment associated with studio practice. Students will produce works which demonstrate a range of skills, media and techniques

Student should note that the majority of this topic is practical work carried out in studio time. Most weeks no further time commitment will be required.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with an introduction to the studio

  • provide students with the techniques and knowledge to handle materials specific to each studio safely

  • enable students to develop a folio of work

  • enable students to develop a journal, including the collection, use and maintenance of relevant information

  • introduce students to materials

  • introduce students to conceptual development.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate safe studio practices and relevant OH&S procedures

  • create and maintain a journal

  • produce works which demonstrate a range of skills, media and techniques

  • demonstrate the ability to realise visual ideas production of considered art works

  • present a critique of selected works to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of visual elements and dynamics.
