This topic will begin by working towards a definition of curatorial and museum studies practice. This approach will be supported by discussion of the notion of curating exhibitions within historical, sociocultural and political frameworks. A range of curated exhibitions across differing cultures, historical eras, and political views and in different kinds of art galleries and museums will be examined on a case study basis.

The topic aims to introduce the field of curatorial and museum studies theory and practice through field trips to Adelaide based exhibitions, both in class time, and/or on weekends. Students will have the opportunity to ‘curate’ a hypothetical exhibition, based on a particular concept, theme, and/or gallery/museum type.

This topic aims to:

• Provide students with a detailed understanding of the concept of curating

• Introduce students to the field of curation

• Examine the practice of curation in a range of contexts, including historical, social, and political

• Expose students to a range of curated exhibitions

• Develop a sound understanding of what in practice constitutes a curated art exhibition

• Give students the opportunity to improve their written and verbal communication skills

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

• Define curation, and explain its theory and practice

• Discuss how different historical, social cultural, and political eras influence the practice of curating visual art exhibitions

• Demonstrate their ability to identify and articulate different curatorial styles and practices

• Articulate, present and defend their ideas both verbally and in writing
