Topic description
In this topic students will analyse and compare different approaches to policy analysis. The role of legal regulation in policy will be focused upon and a policy case study will be discussed in detail.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to the key sources and contemporary debates in the legal and policy literature

  • ensure that students recognise the contested and uncertain nature of law and policy making in contemporary societies

  • develop students' oral and written communication skills by engaging with relevant literature on a weekly basis

  • further develop students research, analysis, organisational and writing skills through a combination of short assignments as well as a large case-study
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic students will:

  • be able to recognise the key concepts in the legal and policy literature

  • have better developed research, analysis, organisational and writing skills

  • be able to write up a substantial report on a case-study analysing the development of a policy with legal content

  • have further developed their independent and critical thinking skills
