Topic description
The Honours thesis in Applied Linguistics is a required component of the full Honours programme in Applied Linguistics. The thesis counts for either 13.5 or 18 units out of the 36 units required for the Honours programme. Students complete an extended piece of research on a topic approved by their thesis supervisor.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • give students the opportunity to undertake independent research in a specialised area of Applied Linguistics

  • analyse and apply theoretical frameworks drawn from the fields of Applied Linguistics

  • collect qualitative or quantitative data through experimental or observational investigation

  • develop students' skills in critical thinking

  • develop students' communicative skills in writing and presenting their work
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completing this topic students should be able to:

  • identify, observe and analyse a specialised area of Applied Linguistics

  • assess the relationship between studies carried out by others in a defined area of Applied Linguistics and a study undertaken by them

  • plan for and carry out a written investigation in a defined area of Applied Linguistics

  • present their work orally in a research seminar
