Topic description
The topic challenges each student to demonstrate an appropriate level of understanding and skills in their chosen field and provides the opportunity to incorporate reflection, analysis and research into practice. All students are required to demonstrate this within the topic.
Educational aims
The Practice Project in Nursing or Midwifery aims to:

  • provide an opportunity for nurses and midwives to develop an understanding of project management, research strategies and the skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest, with the assistance of a supervisor
  • prepare successful graduates for research practice and utilisation in the clinical setting and/or higher degree research studies. Admission to a higher degree research program is usually restricted to applicants with grade point average of distinction, and an 18 unit thesis or equivalent (equivalence is usually judged on publications in referred journals)
  • encourage and support students to write for publication.

Expected learning outcomes
The Practice Project in Nursing or Midwifery will help students achieve the following objectives:

  • effectively use time to achieve their goal
  • pose and refine relevant questions or foci for project (in an appropriate timeframe)
  • develop a logical plan for the management of a project that is feasible and achievable within the given timeframe
  • critically review the relevant literature
  • discern and understand any ethical considerations related to the project and appropriately address them in a timely manner
  • collect and analyse data, present the findings and defend the conclusions (for clinical effectiveness studies, research projects, evaluation, needs analysis, systematic reviews, case study of practice or organisational issue) or
  • analyse and implement change strategy, health promotion strategy or education program
  • construct a project report incorporating 1-7.
