Topic description
The topic provides an overview of laboratory methods employed by archaeologists with a focus on palaeoecological reconstruction in Quaternary Australia. Field and laboratory procedures involved in chronometric dating, sediment sampling and analysis, palynology and plant and microfossil and macrofossil studies, faunal and human skeletal analysis, and other palaeoecological techniques will be examined.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide an overview of laboratory and field methods employed by archaeologists in relation to palaeoecological reconstruction

  • provide students with a sound understanding of chronometric dating methods

  • examine climate change during the Pleistocene and Holocene periods as well as its impact on human adaptations in Australia

  • develop students' critical thinking skills in relation to the employment of various laboratory and field methods in palaeoecology
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • compare and contrast various methods used by archaeologists to reconstruct past ecosystems

  • demonstrate a detailed knowledge of various dating methods employed in archaeology and palaeoecology

  • critically evaluate arguments made in journal articles addressing various research areas in the archaeological sciences

  • communicate an argument clearly and coherently in the form of oral presentations and written research reports
