Topic description
This topic focuses on the management of natural resources. The main areas covered include: the economics of pollution and pollution abatement; the economics of renewable and non-renewable resources; benefit-cost analysis and project evaluation; global warming and water policies.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to offer advice to corporations and governments on how to sustainably and efficiently utilise publicly and privately owned resource assets.

More specifically, students should be knowledgeable of:
  • how economic instruments can be used to control pollution levels and use renewable and non-renewable resources in the long-term public interest
  • how a benefit-cost analysis study can be conducted to assess the economic and environmental desirability of a proposed development project
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students should be able to:
  • demonstrate that they understand the basic theory and principles of environmental economics and can apply them to solve real world environmental problems
  • identify the economic reason for an environmental problem and determine what economic instruments can be used to alleviate the problem
  • demonstrate that they are able to gather information pertaining to a particular economic problem (research) and use it to solve an environmental problem with the use of environmental economics.
