Topic description
This topic assesses the impact of the global financial crisis on the political economy of reform in China, and the role that China's global economic demand played in facilitating recovery from the crisis. Students will be expected to understand the nature of China's reforms and emergence as a major player in the global economy, as well as the domestic challenges it faces.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  • introduce students to the political economy of reform in China
  • explore the impact of the global financial crisis on China
  • assess critically China's role in facilitating recovery from the crisis
  • gain an appreciation of the domestic and global economic challenges facing China
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be aware of:
