Topic description

This topic introduces students to foundational sciences that underpin midwifery practice, with particular focus on anatomy and physiology and microbiology. This topic will provide the student with a strong scientific foundation for ongoing learning in science, pharmacology and clinical midwifery topics.

This topic aims to introduce students to the basic sciences underpinning midwifery practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Examine basic cell structure, cell division and tissue composition pertaining to reproduction
  2. Compare in detail the structures in the different anatomical systems of the human body
  3. Examine the concept of homeostasis and regulation in the human body
  4. Integrate the knowledge of immunological and microbiological concepts to their application in infection control
  5. Integrate the knowledge of anatomy and normal physiology of the human body systems to apply in clinical practice
