Topic description
This topic introduces students to a range of auxiliary disciplines related to the life of a professional dancer, including music studies, anatomy and conditioning.

Students will develop an understanding of musical structures, epochs, and styles and how these transform into movement and dance. This will relate to an understanding of how a dancer’s body transforms music through investigating anatomical functions such as breathing and the kinesiology of body movement. The topic will develop methods through which dancers understand their bodies as part of their craft, and methods through which they can employ methods and training to ensure continued good health, fitness, and injury mitigation and rehabilitation.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the skills to:

  • Identify musical epochs and styles, as they apply to contemporary and classical dance
  • recognise aurally and visually, standard orchestral instruments
  • read musical rhythm and pitch notation
  • recognise how musical elements are interpreted by human anatomy
  • apply the principles of Yoga as a technique and philosophy employed in body conditioning for dancers
  • explore the nature, causes, management and methods of preventing dance injuries and strategies for coping with injury
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify and discuss elements of musical history, style, notation and performance, and how these relate to dance performance
  • read basic musical notation, and represent these through simple songs
  • demonstrate and discuss one or more methods for condition and training for dancers
  • demonstrate the ability to prepare themselves to train in a way that promotes health and prevents injury, and appropriate methods for coping with immediate and long term dance injuries.
