Topic description

This topic focuses on the current policy and practice landscape in which people with disability receive supports. Students will explore the network of systems within which support to people with disability is provided and consider their role(s) in these systems. This will include the ways they will work in partnership with people with a disability and family members, other allied health professionals, advocates and the wider community. It also builds awareness around the role of disability professional’s, including their professional identity.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with an understanding of the way that current service systems and policies operate in Australia to support people with disability
  • Develop students understanding of the practices required to support a person with disability to navigate service systems
  • Explore how disability professionals can identify and work in partnership with key stakeholders, including people with a disability and family members, to live flourishing lives
  • Build awareness of the role(s) of disability professionals
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Understand and maintain current knowledge of the contemporary practice landscape in which people with disability receive support in a range of contexts
  2. Articulate the roles of disability professionals and how this intersects with key stakeholders, including people with a disability and family members, other allied health professionals and the wider community
  3. Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal and interprofessional strategies for working in the disability landscape
