Topic description
This topic aims to introduce students to contemporary theological thinking about the human person. It will include discussion of the human person as created in the imago Dei; understandings of original sin and original righteousness; and the role of the incarnation in the Christian understanding of humanity.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
- introduce students to contemporary thinking on theological anthropology, creation and the doctrines of sin and incarnation.
- explore a theological approach to human potential, growth, and development.
- provide an anthropological understanding of the incarnation and the work of Christ.
- explore theological anthropology as the basis for Christian ethics and human rights.
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:
- outline and describe ways in which theologies of original sin and original righteousness influence understandings of Christology and ethics
- compare and contrast differing contemporary and classical interpretations of theological anthropology, assessing their relevance for a contemporary understanding of what it is to be human
- analyse the way in which theological anthropology contributes to contemporary conversations of human rights and ethics.
