Topic description
This topic will introduce students to communication skills in the context of health care. They will learn and apply the principles of effective interpersonal and inter-professional communication and develop oral presentation skills. Focus will be placed on group work, reflection, ethical communication, cultural safety and communication with individuals across the lifespan, with a range of conditions and in a range of contexts.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Introduce students to the principles of communication skills in health care
- Emphasise the importance of self reflection and awareness, empathy, respect, cultural safety and ethics in communication
- Emphasise the importance of information literacy and academic integrity
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Understand and apply communication skills principles for interpersonal and inter-professional communication in health care
- Reflect on personal communication skills to identify further learning
- Develop a greater understanding of their own values and the impact of values and judgements on communication
- Identify quality sources of information and apply information literacy skills
- Develop skills in working collaboratively and oral presentation skills
- An appreciation of cultural safety principles and ethical communication
