Topic description
In this topic the students will develop a beginning level of knowledge, skills and attitude (competence) required to care for women and their families experiencing a normal pregnancy, birth and puerperium. Students will have the opportunity to explore the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and emotional aspects of care in the antenatal, intrapartum and post natal periods of the child bearing experience.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to care for women and their families experiencing a normal pregnancy, birth and puerperium.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Examine the psychological, physical, social, spiritual aspects of the childbearing experience

  2. Assess, plan and implement care of the woman, baby(s) during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period

  3. Plan for the discharge of the woman and baby including available community resources and development of parenting skills

  4. Demonstrate a beginning level of competence required for midwifery practice.
