This topic introduces students to two methods that are integral to social work: group work and community development. Students will be introduced to the roles and skills used by social workers in working with groups and communities, in different therapeutic, social and cultural contexts. Group work and community development theoretical concepts and processes will be explored, including planning, facilitation, evaluation and responding to challenges that may arise. This topic uses experiential learning, including role plays and other exercises.
This topic aims to prepare students for social work practice with groups and communities. It aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills, so they can plan and implement group work and community development projects and programs. It also aims to develop students’ skills in critically analysing groups and communities and critically reflecting on their own participation in groups.
