Topic description

The topic introduces a range of social work theories, such as task centred practice, cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment theory, person-centred practice, systems theory, empowerment, feminism, post-structuralism and the strengths perspective. Through case studies and other exercises, students will learn to appropriately select and apply social work theories to practice. Students will develop a framework for understanding social work theories and reflecting on their own professional identity.

Educational aims

This topic aims to build students’ understanding, knowledge and skills in social work theories and the application of theory to practice, in preparation for their first Field Education placement. Students will be able to select and apply appropriate theoretical knowledge in working with various client systems, i.e. individuals, families, small groups and communities. Students will develop a framework for understanding theories, which will be utilised for reflection and analysis, to form a beginning understanding about their own professional practice.
