Course context

Any costs incurred in seeking clearance will need to be covered by the student or a sponsoring organisation. On completion of this workshop, students will not necessarily have obtained any form of Australian Clearance.

Topic description

This topic will cover the following:

  1. A discussion of the types of engineering and information technology professions that require a check or a special clearance (including defence industry, public services, health services and emergency services)
  2. Types of Australian clearance (including National Police Checks, AGSVA clearances, Working with Children, etc.)
  3. Clearance regimes in other countries
  4. Impediments to obtaining clearance
  5. Responsibilities of clearance holders
  6. The legal framework underpinning clearances
  7. The process of obtaining clearance in Australia

Optionally, for those requiring clearance for specific projects, the workshop will assist in starting the paperwork required.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce students to the nature of engineering and information technology professions that require a check or a special clearance including the defence industry, some public service occupations, some health and medical services and the emergency services. Students will learn about the processes and requirements of obtaining and retaining the necessary clearances and the obligations and responsibilities of clearance holders. Optionally, for those requiring clearance for specific projects, the workshop will assist in starting the paperwork required.

  1. Explain the rationale behind the Australian clearance and check system
  2. Understand the nature of some engineering and information technology professions that require a check or a special clearance
