Topic description

This topic will focus on the midwifery care of the neonate with complex needs related to physical, psychological, social and pathological risk factors. This topic includes professional experience placement in a Special Care Nursery.

Educational aims

This topic aims to prepare the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to identify, assess and care for neonates with complex needs.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe prenatal influences on neonates health and development
  2. Identify physical, psychological, social and pathological risks for neonates
  3. Explain the pathophysiology of common conditions that place neonates at risk
  4. Demonstrate appropriate care for neonates with complex needs
  5. Discuss the legal and ethical dimensions of caring for neonates with complex needs
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of medication management of conditions encountered by the neonate with complex needs
