THEO3331 Christian Ethics

This topic provides an introduction to and overview of contemporary Christian ethics, looking at the way Christian ethicists, theologians and intellectuals have drawn on scripture, theological tradition, cultural understanding and philosophical ethics in the development of a Christian ethical framework.

The shape of moral discernment will be explored as well as the challenges of a Christian ethic engaging publicly with secular culture and politics.

Particular ethical challenges relevant in the contemporary context, including discrimination, economic, ecological, sexuality and reproductive issues, will be examined.

This topic aims to:

• Provide an introduction to Christian ethics, drawing from the scriptures, theological tradition, cultural understandings and wider resources of philosophical ethics
• Develop the skills and ability to examine and discuss ethical issues in dialogue with these sources
• Consider the implications for living ethically in contemporary contexts
• Develop the skills necessary to engage in logical, coherent, and constructive ethical discourse

2. Debate a range of major ethical issues within contemporary society
3. Discuss the implications of the particular character of Christian ethics for public engagement and debate in light of the contemporary cultural and political context in Australia
