Topic description

This topic examines violence and abuse, from a social work perspective, using concepts of power and control to explain oppressive and abusive behaviour.

Educational aims

This topic aims to develop students’ understandings of violence and abuse experienced by individuals, families and groups. Students will explore and analyse concepts of power and control.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Discuss how power and control is exercised across interpersonal violence and abuse
  2. Examine interpersonal violence and abuse, including child abuse, domestic violence, family violence, sexual abuse and elder abuse
  3. Investigate violence and abuse related problems
  4. Critique violence and abuse using intersectional frameworks
  5. Apply principles of practice for working with people experiencing violence and abuse
