Topic description
This topic is designed to provide beginning insights into autism spectrum disorders through a balanced perspective of family (including the individual with autism/asperger syndrome), community, educational and employment issues. Quality of life issues for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families will be highlighted throughout the topic.
Educational aims
Aim of this topic is for students to have broad and current knowledge of:

  • Key characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the strengths and challenges associated with the diagnosis, across the lifespan for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families and other key stakeholders

  • Best practice in the field of ASD, including assessments and interventions.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss key concepts related to ASD

  2. Apply best practice concepts in ASD, including educating and supporting individuals on the autism spectrum, their families and other key stakeholders across the lifespan

  3. Analyse and interpret literature on specific areas of intervention related to ASD.
