Topic description

This topic orientates students to the skills and institutional cultures related to academic research and the role of social science in vocations within and outside of higher education. Subjects covered include research project design (including methodology and methods), project management skills, professional writing, critical reading and critique, ethics, data collection, analysis and managing data sets, funding bodies, presentation skills and career planning.

Educational aims

This topic aims to equip students with a range of skills, both theoretical, academic, practical and professional as they relate to the conduct of ethical research.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Assess your own strengths and weaknesses in relation to research skills, and take steps to address the latter
  2. Employ critical reading and writing skills within a research context
  3. Design and develop a viable research project proposal and present this to your peers
  4. Critique your own work and that of peers in a constructive manner
