Topic description

Design methodologies for complex and ill-defined mechanical engineering problems; identifying client needs and gathering information; assessment and evaluation of engineering designs; developing design specifications; project management and documentation; teamwork, leadership and mentoring; self-reflection, creativity and innovation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of mechanical design, through studying and applying:

  • Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined mechanical engineering design problems
  • The integration of theory and methods across the range of mechanical engineering subjects
  • The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs
  • Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements
  • Project management and documentation methods and tools in the mechanical engineering context, eg ISO9001
  • The variety of roles in mechanical engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring
  • Creativity, innovation and self-reflection
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of mechanical design
  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to complex mechanical engineering design problems
  3. Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills appropriate for a professional engineer
  4. Use project management and documentation methods and tools
