REMH8006 Remote Advanced Nursing Practice and Pharmacotherapeutics

Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse is required to undertake this topic.

Also this topic requires successful completion of a recognised Remote Emergency Care Course (or equivalent) within the 3 years prior to enrolling in this topic or by the completion of REMH8006 Remote Advanced Nursing Practice & Pharmacotherapeutics.

This topic provides the foundation for advanced nursing practice in the unique environmental and cultural context that characterizes the inseparable work and living situation of Remote Health professionals worldwide. The Remote Area Nurse (RAN) model of consultation is used as a framework for contextualizing nursing specific knowledge within the interprofessional Primary Health Care team. Using the RAN model of consultation students learn comprehensive health assessment, history taking, systems examination, diagnostics, cross cultural communication, distance consultations and referrals for remote and Indigenous people across the lifespan. Students also develop knowledge and skills in pharmacotherapeutics, brief interventions and clinical procedures for management of people of all ages experiencing common acute, urgent and unstable conditions in isolated, remote and Indigenous contexts. A clinical practicum within a remote Primary Health Care clinic is included in this topic to facilitate application of theory to practice and development of confident, competent and accountable practice.

This topic aims to provide the opportunity for nurses to develop a framework for advanced and extended nursing practice to confidently and competently recognize, assess and manage common acute, urgent and unstable conditions across the lifespan in remote and Indigenous Primary Health Care settings.

1. Conduct advanced, comprehensive and holistic assessment using the RAN model of consultation, evidence-based knowledge and clinical practice guidelines
2. Integrate relevant issues of history, colonisation, access and health need in the planning and provision of health care to isolated, marginalised and Indigenous people
3. Analyse and critique knowledge to confidently and competently carry out a range of procedures, treatment and interventions to manage common conditions across the lifespan within a collaborative model of Primary Health Care applicable to the remote and Indigenous health context
4. Integrating comprehensive assessment and best practice guidelines together with strategies that mazimise compliance and therapeutic relationships to select and supply appropriate medication within legislation and scope of practice
5. Evaluate the patient/client’s condition and response to therapy to recommend modifications to management plans as needed for patient/client-centred outcomes
