Topic description
Within this topic, we will explore the foundations of comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans for individuals living with disabilities in community-based settings. We will review principles of learning, and the steps involved in conducting assessment and functional analysis. This will include indirect and direct assessment methods, developing and testing hypotheses, and goal setting.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable graduates to conduct individualised functional behaviour assessment and analysis for individuals with complex behaviour support needs in partnership with key stakeholders.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Determine appropriate indirect and direct assessment methods to determine factors influencing the occurrence of behaviours of concern

  2. Compile and critically interpret assessment data to explain operant behaviours using the four-term contingency model

  3. Formulate and test data-based hypotheses to determine the function of behaviours of concern for individuals with complex support needs

  4. Present functional behaviour assessments using professional language that is accessible to key stakeholders.
