Topic description

This topic will provide students with skills and knowledge for the study and application of Christian Ethics by engaging a number of key ethical issues in critical conversation with scripture, theological tradition, cultural understandings and wider resources of philosophical ethics. The topic will support considerations of what it might mean to live ethically in contemporary society.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide a formative understanding of Christian ethics, drawing from the scriptures, theological tradition, cultural understandings and wider resources of philosophical ethics
  • Develop the skills to frame logical and coherent arguments in the area of ethics
  • Evaluate the implications for living ethically in contemporary contexts
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the contributions to ethical thinking and practice that scripture, theological tradition, cultural understanding and philosophical ethics offer
  2. Determine the boundaries of a contemporary ethical issue and identify the progression of logic within the argument and its theological basis
  3. Justify a reflection on the philosophical logic of a complex ethical argument
  4. Defend the argument in a range of situations and to different audiences
