Topic description

In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge for the assessment and management of adult patients in a high acuity surgical nursing environment through critical exploration of evidence-based principles and practices in nursing.

This topic aims for students to develop specialised knowledge in the assessment and management of adult patients in a high acuity surgical nursing environment through critical exploration of evidence-based principles and practices in nursing.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced specialised knowledge of aetiology and pathophysiology in the assessment and management of patients who require high acuity surgical care
  2. Evaluate and apply strategies for the assessment and management of pain in high acuity surgical environments
  3. Critique approaches for the assessment and management of wounds, intravenous and arterial access lines and wound drainage tubes in high acuity surgical patients
  4. Identify, synthesise and utilise the best available evidence to inform practice, in the context of high acuity surgical nursing care
  5. Apply advanced communication skills while working within a multidisciplinary team in high acuity surgical nursing environment
