Topic description

In this topic students will be introduced to advanced camera techniques and strategies for shooting digital stories.

Students will be exposed to digital story telling cinematography concepts and techniques, with opportunities to extend their knowledge while working collaboratively and creatively with their peers.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with:

  • An advanced understanding of how the camera is used for screen production with reference to drama, documentary and underwater productions
  • An opportunity to view fiction and non-fiction films and analyses the cinematography critically
  • An advanced understanding of the role of the cinematographer in screen production
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the role of the camera and cinematographer in screen production
  2. Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the use of the camera in screen productions, including underwater applications
  3. Demonstrate application of advanced camera techniques through individual research
  4. Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the administrative requirements for individual projects, and apply standard practices in risk mitigation and workplace health and safety
  5. Demonstrate the use of technical and creative skills to apply theoretical and practical knowledge of cinematography to professional practice or scholarship
  6. Demonstrate the ability to generate and evaluate complex ideas associated with lighting and composition in documentary production
