Topic description

Students will be provided with theoretical and practical training in evidence-based frameworks for case-conceptualisation, treatment planning and psychotherapeutic treatment, with particular emphasis on cognitive behavioural approaches. The topic will also provide students with skills training in developing a therapeutic alliance through micro-counselling techniques. The emphasis of the topic is on practical skills development.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop basic therapeutic competencies in psychological intervention
  • Develop knowledge and skills in planning evidence based interventions for common presentations of mild to moderate intensity
  • Provide theory and skills training in cognitive behaviour therapy and related approaches for common presenting issues
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate effective use of core micro-counselling skills
  2. Synthesise information to formulate a case conceptualisation and treatment plan for common adult presentations
  3. Demonstrate competence in delivering cognitive behavioural and related techniques
  4. Monitor and manage client progress using qualitative and quantitative approaches
