LLIR9507 Law and International Relations in the Asia/Pacific

This topic introduces the changes and developments of international relations in Asia-Pacific, especially in the issues of the big powers' relations and the regional cooperation in Asia-Pacific. There will be a particular emphasis on the rise of Chinese power and influence. Furthermore this topic will review the international legal issues arising in the region with a particular emphasis on the law of the sea issues arising from Chinese maritime claims.

This topic aims to:

• Gain a deeper understanding of the reasons of Australia's position in the Asia/Pacific and the challenges this poses for Australian policy makers
• Understand the changing regional and global balance
• Gain an understanding of existing legal regimes and frameworks within international law that apply to the Asia/Pacific

1. Determine the position Australia occupies in the Asia/Pacific
2. Identify policy options arising from Australia's engagement with other countries in the Asia/Pacific, particularly China and Japan
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the international legal issues that have arisen in the Asia Pacific
4. Contribute to academic debate over Chinese intentions and the likely outcomes arising from growing Chinese power
